Schools Closed Across Greece Due to Snow and Severe Cold

Local authorities announce closures and delayed openings as extreme winter weather continues, while the Education Ministry instructs schools to switch to remote learning where possible

Schools across parts of Greece will remain closed on Tuesday as snow, frost and very low temperatures disrupt daily life in several regions, prompting precautionary measures from local authorities.

Municipalities are gradually announcing school closures for Tuesday, January 13, after assessing weather conditions caused by ongoing severe cold. The aim is to ensure the safety of students and teachers, particularly in areas affected by snow and icy roads.

One of the first municipalities to announce closures was Ancient Olympia, where the mayor ordered all schools — from kindergartens to high schools — to remain closed in four local communities due to intense cold and frost. The decision applies to all educational levels and is focused on protecting health and safety, especially in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.

In northern Greece, schools in the city of Florina will operate on a delayed schedule. According to the local municipality, classes will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday because of extremely low temperatures, while childcare centers will continue to operate normally.

The Ministry of Education has issued clear guidance for cases where schools are closed due to adverse weather. When municipal authorities suspend in-person classes, lessons must continue through remote learning, provided technical conditions allow it. Distance education is to be activated immediately to ensure continuity of the school curriculum and minimize disruption to students.
