Seafarers Announce Nationwide May Day Strike

The strike is set to begin at 12:01am on Friday and conclude at midnight the same day, bringing all coastal shipping and other maritime routes to a standstill.

Seafarers across Greece will stage a 24-hour nationwide strike covering all categories of vessels on Friday, May 1, 2026, following a unanimous decision by the leadership of the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO). The action forms part of this year’s Labor Day mobilizations.

The strike is set to begin at 12:01am on Friday and conclude at midnight the same day, bringing all coastal shipping and other maritime routes to a standstill.

In a statement, the Federation underlined that its core demands remain the protection of human life at sea, the safeguarding of decent working conditions, and the strengthening of collective bargaining—placing particular emphasis on the renewal and signing of collective labor agreements.

At the same time, the PNO highlighted the need to preserve and upgrade the public and free character of maritime education, stressing that it must adapt to the sector’s rapid technological developments.

Within its broader framework of demands, the Federation is also calling for stronger public healthcare and education systems, as well as the restoration of losses suffered by retired seafarers in recent years.
