A second workplace accident in the span of days has struck the Perama Ship Repair Zone near Piraeus, raising fresh concerns about safety standards at one of Greece’s busiest shipbuilding and repair hubs.
The latest victim is a 23-year-old foreign national, a crew member aboard a Cyprus-flagged passenger and vehicle ferry, who was injured while in the ship repair area. The Hellenic Coast Guard, which oversees maritime safety and port operations, said the circumstances of the incident are under investigation by the competent port authorities.
An ambulance from EKAB, Greece’s national emergency medical service, responded immediately and transported the injured sailor to Thriasio General Hospital in Elefsina for medical treatment.
The accident follows closely on the heels of an earlier incident at the same facility, in which a 61-year-old employee of a private repair contractor was injured. That accident triggered complaints about the absence of adequate hygiene and safety measures at the Perama zone.
The Perama Ship Repair Zone, located on the western shore of the Saronic Gulf just outside Piraeus, is a major center for vessel maintenance and repair in the Eastern Mediterranean.
