More than 2,500 livestock farms across Greece have been affected by an ongoing outbreak of sheep and goat pox, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the National Scientific Committee for Disease Management and Control.
Since August 2024, a total of 476,839 animals have been culled in an effort to contain the disease. Authorities report that 2,595 farms nationwide have been impacted, with 2,094 confirmed cases recorded to date.
Between February 1 and February 8, 2026, ten new cases were confirmed in seven regional areas of the country. Officials note that data on the outbreak is continuously updated as final reports are submitted by regional authorities, with regular public updates aimed at ensuring transparency for farmers and the wider public.
The ministry stressed that strict adherence to biosecurity measures remains critical to limiting the spread of the disease. Livestock producers are urged to follow all veterinary service instructions and established health protocols.
