Greek police arrested six people, including a prison employee, during a drug raid on Monday at the Avlona Special Juvenile Detention Establishment.
The operation was carried out by the Organized Crime Division with the assistance of the Hellenic Police Special Forces (EKAM) and in the presence of a prosecutor. It was part of a wider police operation targeting criminal networks operating inside correctional facilities.
Authorities said the raid followed information about the possession and distribution of drugs inside the prison.
Drugs and cellphones found in three cells
Police searched three cells and seized small quantities of cocaine, raw cannabis and processed cannabis in a form known in Greece as “chocolate,” as well as four cellphones.
According to the preliminary investigation, five inmates were arrested on drug possession charges. Authorities said the inmates were jointly distributing quantities of drugs to other prisoners.
A prison employee was also arrested after being found in possession of a hand-rolled cigarette containing raw cannabis. The cigarette was confiscated.
On the orders of the prosecutor handling the case, the prison employee was released.
Six suspects taken to prosecutor
The six people arrested had previously come to the attention of authorities for similar and other offenses, according to police.
The five inmates and the prison employee were taken before a prosecutor following the operation.
