Powerful winds continued to affect Attica and other parts of Greece on Friday, with wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h in many areas and reaching 150 km/h at the peak of Mount Penteli, according to weather monitoring data.
The highest wind gust recorded in the Attica region by 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 31, was measured at the Penteli summit, where winds reached 150 km/h, according to the network of automatic weather stations operated by the National Observatory of Athens and its meteo.gr weather service.
Strong northeasterly winds have been blowing since early Friday across eastern mainland Greece, the Aegean Sea and the Attica region, creating hazardous conditions in combination with high temperatures.
High wildfire risk in Attica
The combination of intense winds and elevated temperatures has created what authorities described as a dangerous situation, with Attica placed among the areas facing a very high wildfire risk — Category 4 — on Friday.
According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, very high fire danger is also present in areas of seven other regions of the country.
Authorities have called on residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activity that could trigger a fire.
Among the measures highlighted are a ban on burning dry grass and branches, as well as avoiding the use of tools or machinery that could create sparks.
