The 28-year-old Egyptian man who confessed to killing prominent Greek criminal defense lawyer Stavros Georgiou is scheduled to appear before an investigating magistrate on Monday, July 27, to give his formal testimony.
The suspect faces charges of premeditated murder committed in a calm state of mind, theft, and illegally residing in Greece. Authorities also said he was the subject of an active arrest warrant in connection with a separate case involving the sexual abuse of a minor.
Suspect’s Account of the Killing
According to investigators, the suspect claimed he met the 73-year-old lawyer while they were both out at an entertainment venue. He alleged that Georgiou offered to drive him home, but the two instead went to the lawyer’s office in central Athens.
The suspect told authorities that an intense argument followed inside the office on 3rd September Street. He attacked Georgiou, striking him repeatedly in the head.
According to reports, the assault was so violent that the suspect broke his own hand during the attack. He is then believed to have sought treatment at KAT General Hospital while providing false personal information.
Laptop Sold for €50
Authorities also believe the suspect stole the lawyer’s laptop after the killing. According to investigators, he allegedly sold the device for just €50.
