The Syntagma metro station in central Athens will close at 2 p.m. today, just hours ahead of a planned anti-war demonstration in the city center.
The closure, ordered by the Hellenic Police, will see metro trains continue to pass through the station without stopping for passengers.
Protesters are expected to gather at Syntagma Square at 3 p.m. for an anti-war and anti-racism rally. The demonstration calls for an end to the war in the Middle East and connects the issue to migration, refugee movements, and rising living costs.
Organizers have also raised concerns over increased military spending, contrasting it with social welfare needs and economic pressures faced by residents.
Similar demonstrations are scheduled across Greece throughout the day, indicating nationwide participation. Rallies are planned in several cities and towns, including Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa, Corfu and Chios, with many taking place around midday.
In Athens, the protest is expected to bring together a broad coalition of groups, including labor unions, migrant and refugee communities, student associations and advocacy organizations.
Residents and visitors in central Athens are advised to plan ahead, as the temporary closure of Syntagma — one of the city’s busiest metro stations — is likely to affect transportation in the area during the afternoon
