Three people were killed early Tuesday after two motorcycles collided on Alexandras Avenue in central Athens.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Alexandras Avenue and Armeni Vraila Street (Moustoxidou), according to the initial investigation.
A 51-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and another female passenger whose identity has not yet been established were killed in the collision. Emergency medical crews from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Center transported the victims to the Red Cross Hospital in Athens, where their deaths were confirmed.
Police investigate possible red-light violation
Traffic police are conducting a preliminary investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash. A possible violation of a red traffic light is among the main scenarios being examined.
Greek police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou told public broadcaster ERT that authorities are searching for video footage and witnesses to determine whether either motorcycle crossed a red light.
“There were traffic lights on both roads,” Dimoglidou said, adding that the initial images did not show any of the three riders wearing protective helmets.
She also stressed the importance of helmet use and compliance with Greece’s traffic regulations.
How the crash happened
According to the preliminary findings, the 51-year-old man was traveling along Alexandras Avenue toward Patision Avenue.
The second motorcycle, carrying the two women, was attempting to cross the intersection when the two motorcycles collided in a side-impact crash.
The force of the collision sent both motorcycles sliding across the roadway before they struck the parked vehicle. All three people on the motorcycles were fatally injured.
Police continue to examine available footage and other evidence as they investigate the circumstances that led to the crash.
