A two-year-old boy is in critical but stable condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion after being rescued unconscious from a swimming pool in Chania, Crete.
The child was found at the bottom of a private pool in the Apokoronas municipality area of Chania and was immediately taken for medical treatment.
Doctors said the boy does not appear to be in immediate danger of losing his life, but they remain concerned about the period of reduced consciousness he experienced after being revived and during his transfer from Rethymno Hospital to the University Hospital of Heraklion.
Doctors Assess Possible Neurological Effects
The main concern for doctors is whether the child suffered any impact on brain function due to the time he spent underwater.
According to the parents, the boy was in the pool for no more than two to three minutes. However, doctors noted that even a short period without oxygen can be critical, especially for a young child.
The medical team is closely monitoring his neurological condition and assessing whether the lack of oxygen caused any complications.
Mother’s Immediate Response Helped Rescue Effort
The child’s mother, who is a doctor, played a key role in the emergency response. She and the boy’s father pulled him from the bottom of the pool and immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The intervention helped restore the child’s breathing before he was transported to hospital.
Although the boy regained consciousness, doctors found that he had not fully recovered awareness. This was observed both at Rethymno Hospital and later at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Heraklion.
The next 24 hours are considered crucial as doctors continue to evaluate his condition and monitor his recovery.
