British authorities have arrested a 46-year-old woman wanted by Greece in connection with the deadly 2010 Marfin bank arson attack, following the activation of an Interpol Red Notice requested by Greek authorities.

The woman is one of three suspects identified in the reopened investigation into the attack on a bank branch in central Athens, where three employees died after becoming trapped inside the burning building during a large anti-austerity demonstration.

According to Greek media reports, before her arrest the woman had contacted the Greek authorities voluntarily, insisting she was innocent and expressing her intention to return to Greece to give her account of the events.

Her lawyer, who also represents the two 42-year-old men arrested in the same case, said the woman had been informed of the developments, declared her willingness to cooperate fully with investigators and planned to travel back from the United Kingdom.

Greek investigators say the case was revived after an anonymous email sent to the country’s Organized Crime Directorate identified the three suspects. Authorities subsequently re-examined evidence gathered during a separate 2020 counterterrorism investigation involving explosives.

According to the investigation, digital files, photographs and videos seized during that earlier inquiry contained images of two men and a woman. Investigators later reanalyzed the material using specialized software, algorithms and artificial intelligence to compare biometric features—including facial characteristics, height, body proportions and gait—with photographic evidence from the day of the Marfin attack.

Police also say that the attack was carried out by an organized group of around 12 people, with different participants assigned specific roles. Investigators say photographic evidence has helped identify individuals involved in breaking the bank’s windows, throwing Molotov cocktails and directing the attack.

One of the key pieces of evidence linking one of the two 42-year-old suspects to the scene was a distinctive backpack bearing three painted stars, which investigators compared with more recent photographs.

The two men arrested in Greece have been charged with multiple counts of intentional homicide over the deaths of the bank employees, who died from smoke inhalation after becoming trapped inside the building.
