A 66-year-old veterinarian has been arrested near Thessaloniki after police discovered an unlicensed facility used to perform surgical procedures on animals, along with violations of animal welfare regulations.

According to the Hellenic Police, officers and officials from relevant authorities carried out an inspection at the man’s property, where they found a space that was being used for animal surgeries without the required operating license.

During the inspection, authorities identified two rooms equipped with surgical tables, medical instruments and other equipment that appeared to be used for veterinary procedures.

Inspectors also found seven dogs and four cats being kept in cages. Police said the animals were living in conditions that did not comply with the country’s animal welfare standards.

The animals were removed from the property following the inspection.
