A youth weightlifting champion is one of three men arrested on charges of “exposure to danger” in connection with the death of a 19-year-old woman on the Ionian island of Kefalonia.
According to reports, the 26-year-old had previously distinguished himself at a European U17 Championship, where he won a gold medal. One of the two arrested men is described as 22-year-old Albanian national, while the other is a 23-year-old local man from the island’s capital, Argostoli. Police conducted searches at the suspects’ homes in the presence of a prosecutor.
The young woman was found dead in the early hours of Tuesday near the central square of Argostoli. Initial findings from the ongoing police investigation did not reveal any visible injuries on her body.
Authorities were led to the arrests and the identification of the third suspect through video footage from the area where the woman was found. According to the same information, at around 4:30 a.m., a car was recorded from which the two arrested men exited and were then seen removing the unconscious 19-year-old woman from the vehicle.
The three men were reportedly with the woman at the time she lost consciousness, something seen on CCTV footage. The charge brought against them is “exposure to danger.”
According to media reports, at least one of the suspects claimed that the four individuals used cocaine at a local residence prior to the woman being found.
