October’s full moon will appear on Monday, October 26, reaching its brightest phase in the early morning hours, at around 6:12 a.m. local time in Greece.
The moon, however, will appear strikingly full from the evening of Sunday, October 25, through Monday night, offering a spectacle for those who enjoy watching the night sky.
The October full moon is also known as the Hunter’s Moon, according to old agricultural calendars and tradition. The name is said to have originated with Native American tribes and farmers, as this time of year marked the end of the harvest.
The fields had just been cleared, making it easier for hunters to spot animals venturing into open areas to feed on what remained of the crops. In addition, the full moon rose shortly after sunset, providing extra light for agricultural work before the arrival of winter.
For those hoping to enjoy the phenomenon, the best time to watch is just after sunset, as the moon rises. At that point, an optical illusion makes the moon appear larger, while it can take on an orange-red hue.
No special equipment or telescope is required. A spot with minimal light pollution, away from city lights, is enough to enjoy the autumn full moon.
