A massive wildfire on the Greek island of Zakynthos has burned more than 4,000 acres of forest and farmland, remaining out of control for a second consecutive day. Three separate fire fronts, stretching over 15 kilometers in total, have forced the evacuation of the areas of Agalas and Keri.
Significant damage has been recorded to homes, tourist accommodations, and agricultural land. At least five rural houses have suffered severe destruction, and many domestic animals have perished in the flames.
Villages Under Threat Overnight
Throughout the night, firefighters and residents worked together to prevent the fire from reaching the villages of Lithakia, Pantokratoras, and Mouzaki. By morning, the fire was still advancing toward Lithakia, while the situation near Keri had improved.
The village of Lithakia spent the night under a heavy pall of smoke, with conditions described as suffocating by morning.
Air Support Hampered by Winds and Terrain
At first light, three Canadair firefighting aircraft began water drops over the affected areas. However, steep terrain and strong winds have made it difficult for aerial crews to reach some parts of the blaze, forcing them to concentrate efforts on areas closest to residential zones.
Emergency Shelter for the Displaced
Local authorities have set up temporary shelters for those forced to leave their homes. Fire service spokesperson Vassilis Vathrakogiannis confirmed the fire remains active and continues to threaten populated areas, though some fronts show signs of stabilization.
