A wave of shock and disbelief has swept through the local community of Heraklion following reports of a deeply disturbing incident involving a 35-year-old woman who allegedly gave birth at home and then disposed of her newborn in a garbage bin.

The incident reportedly took place late Tuesday night, May 20. According to information obtained by the local news outlet creta24.gr, the woman is believed to have delivered a baby boy in the bathtub of her home while she was alone. She then allegedly placed the newborn in a garbage bag and threw it into a nearby waste container.

The situation came to light when the woman’s husband, noticing heavy bleeding, called emergency medical services (EKAV). Paramedics who arrived on the scene quickly realized that the bleeding was due to childbirth.

They repeatedly asked her where the baby was, but she appeared to be in a state of confusion and was unable to provide clear answers. Authorities were immediately alerted and launched a search for the missing infant.

It was the woman’s husband—apparently unaware of the pregnancy—who eventually told police that she had thrown something away and pointed them to the specific trash bin. Inside, officers reportedly found the baby.

Both the mother and her newborn were immediately transported to the University Hospital of Heraklion following the incident. According to sources, the infant was conscious upon arrival and is reported to be in good health.

Initially, the woman was reluctant to go to the hospital, but her partner ultimately persuaded her to seek medical attention.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the woman remains hospitalized under police guard.
