Greek police have detained a woman seen on security footage transporting and abandoning the lifeless body of a three-year-old girl on a beach near Athens. The disturbing case has gripped public attention as authorities try to uncover the truth behind the child’s death.
The girl was found dead on Edem Beach in the coastal suburb of Palaio Faliro. The woman, whose identity has not been made public, was captured in multiple surveillance videos—first pushing the child in a stroller and later leaving the empty stroller in nearby bushes. She was finally located and taken into custody late Friday, raising hopes that answers may soon emerge in the baffling case.
Key Evidence from Video Footage
The case broke open after investigators analyzed three crucial videos:
- In the first video, the woman is seen wearing a light summer dress and shopping at a kiosk with three children—two walking beside her and one, believed to be the victim, strapped into a stroller with a white sunhat covering her face.
- In a second clip, taken later that day, she is seen walking in the area with only two children and no stroller.
- In the third and most damning video, the woman is caught abandoning the empty stroller in a park near the beach.
Authorities suspect that she initially arrived with three children but left the area with only two.
Unanswered Questions Surround the Child’s Death
The autopsy revealed the girl had drowned, but forensic investigators also found sand in her stomach and lungs, suggesting she may have been in the water while already dead—or that she was carried for hours after drowning. Bruises on her face and signs of decomposition on her arms were reportedly concealed by clothing and a hat.
“How did the child drown? Why was her body left in the sea hours later? Why not dispose of it elsewhere?” asked a police analyst speaking to Greek media. Investigators are also considering whether the woman was trying to create the appearance of a drowning to cover up another cause of death.
Some officials have speculated about a possible connection to a child trafficking ring, though no direct evidence has been made public so far. The woman’s nationality remains unconfirmed, but initial fears that she had fled the country prompted a search at airports and border crossings.
