A World War II-era hand grenade was discovered near a river in central Greece, where military bomb disposal specialists safely neutralized the device.
The unexploded ordnance was found on Monday, July 6, by walkers near the town of Amfikleia, who immediately alerted the police after spotting the object.
British grenade identified
According to local reports, the device was identified as a British No. 36 Mills hand grenade, a model widely used by the British Army during both World War I and World War II.
Police secured the area and notified military bomb disposal specialists from the Hellenic Army.
Controlled disposal operation
Bomb disposal experts first inspected and identified the grenade before carrying out a controlled disposal operation the following day, on July 7.
The device was safely neutralized without incident.
