Olympiacos was again impressive in a “friendly” victory against Al-Taawoun (2-1) on Friday, with more goals possibly missing due to the absence of a true center forward in the lineup.
The Piraeus club leaves the Netherlands undefeated and are preparing for their next friendly against Bundesliga side Union Berlin in less than 24 hours.
Against Al-Taawoun, coach José Luis Mendilibar’s team was boosted by two of the Reds’ rising young stars, both of whom have been promoted from Olympiacos’ youth academies: 19-year-old midfielder Stavros Pnevmonidis and 18-year-old Argyris Liatsikouras, among the standouts of the preseason.
Pnevmonidis opened the scoring and was involved in the second goal, which was ultimately scored by Brazilian striker Gabriel Strefezza, following an assist by his compatriot, right back Rodinei.
The two precise finishes by the Reds were their only goals scored despite several missed opportunities in the closing minutes. At the top of the attack, Yazici played as a forward by necessity, while Giorgos Masouras was off target on the day.
Overall, the Piraeus side comfortably controlled most of the game but was not as lethal as in previous friendlies.
Olympiacos: Botis, Rodrinei, Vezo, Pirola, Ortega, Sipioni, Liatsikouras (63’ Garcia), Nascimento, Strefezza, Pnevmonidis (63’ Masouras), Yazici.
