Libyan parliament leader Aguila Saleh Issa will make his first official visit to Greece, meeting Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis as Athens reiterates its opposition to the Turkey–Libya maritime agreement
Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself received Belgacem Haftar, the son of Gen. Khalifa Haftar, the de facto leader of eastern Libya, a day after a meeting with Greece's FM
In a separate development, Mitsotakis later spoke by phone with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)
Libya also objects to Greece’s April 17, 2025 declaration of an EEZ in the Ionian Sea, published under official government decree (No. 59). According to Libya, the southern boundary of this zone is violating Libya’s continental shelf rights
Earlier this month, an EU delegation including Greece’s migration minister was denied entry into eastern Libya following meetings with the Tripoli-based government
The Libyan government asserts that “neither Greece nor Egypt has sovereign rights” in the maritime zones established between Libya and Turkey under this accord.
The Energy Minister underscored the geopolitical significance of the upcoming visit by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, scheduled for November 6–7.
“Greece can and should be Libya’s voice in Europe and the world,” Greece's Foreign Minister emphasized.
The diplomatic mission follows closely on the heels of a formal note sent by Libya to the United Nations, in which Tripoli challenges Greece's delineation of its maritime borders.
