The Greek island of Astypalaia has been highlighted as one of Europe’s ten leading “hidden gems” for the summer of 2026, according to a recent feature by the British newspaper The Sun.
The selection brings together destinations from across the continent that stand out for their authenticity, unspoiled natural beauty, and commitment to more sustainable forms of tourism. Emphasis is placed on places that have managed to preserve their local identity while offering visitors the chance to discover lesser-known corners of Europe, away from the pressures of mass tourism.
Within this context, Astypalaia is portrayed as one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive and relatively unexplored island destinations. The publication draws attention to its striking butterfly-like shape—earning it the nickname “the Butterfly of the Aegean”—as well as its crystal-clear waters, unhurried pace of life, and beaches that remain notably tranquil even during peak season.
Particular reference is also made to the island’s main town, Chora of Astypalaia, where whitewashed houses cascade toward the sea beneath the imposing presence of the Venetian Castle of Astypalaia. Traditional tavernas and preserved elements of everyday island life further contribute to an experience that is both authentic and deeply rooted in local culture.
The list itself spans a range of destinations across Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, reflecting a broader European shift toward more meaningful and environmentally conscious travel experiences.
As noted by Deputy Mayor Konstantinos Kampylis, the island continues to stand out precisely because it aligns with what today’s travelers are increasingly seeking: “authentic experiences, a unique natural environment, quality services, and respect for local identity.”
