Kefalonia: Rugged Beauty, Cosmopolitan Charm
The largest and most mountainous of the Ionian islands, Kefalonia lies opposite the Gulf of Patras, just north of Zakynthos. In summer, traditional serenades and evening strolls through Argostoli’s cobbled streets, boat songs, and philharmonic concerts blend with visits to historic sites and sandy beaches.
The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli traces the island’s history from the Paleolithic to late Roman times, with finds ranging from flint tools and Mycenaean gold coins to bronze swords and an Egyptian scarab. Nearby, Drogarati Cave — an estimated 150 million years old — is famous for its stalactite formations and the extraordinary acoustics of its main chamber, still used for concerts today.
Among the island’s beaches, Myrtos is the most iconic, while Argostoli locals favor Makrys and Platys Gialos, two connected stretches of fine golden sand. To the north, the picturesque village of Fiskardo adds a cosmopolitan touch, its harbor filled with sailboats and yachts. Kefalonia is also a haven for hikers exploring Mount Ainos and for divers drawn to the underwater caves of Fiskardo and the rich seabeds off Agia Efimia, Skala, Argostoli, and Paliki.
Lefkada: A Wind Surfer’s Paradise
At the heart of the Ionian Sea, Lefkada gave rise to some of Greece’s greatest poets and scholars — Aristotelis Valaoritis, Angelos Sikelianos, Nikos Svoronos, and Kleareti Dipla-Malamou — alongside a rich tradition of music and dance. Its top resorts, Nydri and Vasiliki, draw visitors year-round.
The island’s Archaeological Museum houses finds from the excavations of German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, who believed Lefkada, not modern Ithaca, was Homer’s true Ithaca. Coastal villages from Kariotes to Vasiliki offer seaside tavernas, water sports, and lively nightlife, while Nydri’s views stretch toward the nearby Princess Islands — Skorpios, Meganisi, Kalamos, and Kastos among them.
Lefkada also ranks among the world’s best wind surfing destinations, with Vasiliki and Ai Giannis leading the way, alongside kitesurfing, diving, hiking, and paragliding. On the wilder west coast, pine forests meet the sea alongside olive groves and vineyards, framing some of Greece’s most spectacular beaches: Kathisma, Egremni, and the world-renowned Porto Katsiki.
