Greece Crowned World Capital of ‘Dock and Dine’ Dining

Greece outperformed all other contenders by a wide margin, earning the title of undisputed capital of “dock and dine” culture, according to Euronews.

A recent study by BoatBooker has named Greece the world’s leading destination for gastronomic experiences accessible exclusively by sea.

The country outperformed all other contenders by a wide margin, earning the title of undisputed capital of “dock and dine” culture, according to Euronews.

With 349 unique restaurants meeting stringent criteria, Greece blends high culinary standards with an unparalleled maritime experience. BoatBooker analyzed more than 1,000 destinations across 45 countries, focusing on restaurants reachable only by boat and holding a minimum rating of 4.5 stars alongside a substantial number of reviews.

The Saronic Gulf, Ionian Sea and Dodecanese (southeast Aegean) island groups stood out for their dense concentration of top-tier dining spots. In particular, Hydra, Paxos and Symi emerged as the most consistent hubs of sea-accessed gastronomy.

The study highlights that few factors can undermine a dining experience faster than overcrowding and the clamor of overrun tourist hotspots. Greece, however, offers travelers the chance to transform the very journey to dinner into the evening’s centerpiece — an experience that lingers long after the final course. The Mediterranean continues to dominate as a magnet for island hospitality.

Together, Croatia and Italy account for more than 70 percent of the world’s restaurants that meet the “dock and dine” criteria. Greece alone represents 34 percent of the global total, setting a benchmark for infrastructure that prioritizes maritime accessibility.

Notably, around 24 percent of Greek restaurants earned ratings of 4.8 stars or higher, underscoring that the operational demands of sea-access venues — from supply logistics and waste management to energy sustainability — often go hand in hand with an elevated commitment to quality and service.

“For many travelers, food is a central pillar of any journey,” said Joris Zantvoort, Head of SEO at BoatBooker. The study aims to guide travelers toward highly rated restaurants on islands where arrival by boat is part of the allure and gastronomy unfolds in a relaxed, unhurried setting.
