The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) has officially named the Region of Crete as the European Region of Gastronomy for 2026. This prestigious title, announced during a celebratory ceremony in Heraklion, is more than an honorary distinction—it is a powerful endorsement of the enduring value and global relevance of the Cretan diet.

Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis emphasized the significance of the award, calling gastronomy “an investment in the future, made collectively by the Region and all local stakeholders.” The decision by IGCAT was unanimous, following a thorough evaluation and on-site visits by European experts.

It highlights the shared efforts and coordinated actions led by the educational development organization Ploigos, in showcasing the island’s rich culinary treasures.

The Cretan diet is not merely a collection of recipes—it is a globally admired model for health and longevity. As French scientist Serge Renaud aptly remarked in 1998, “Don’t look for a pill to replace the Cretan diet. There’s no such thing.”

Numerous medical studies have repeatedly confirmed its health benefits, linking it to low rates of chronic diseases and some of the world’s lowest mortality figures.

This nutritional heritage is rooted in Crete’s rich biodiversity, favorable climate, and traditional farming, with its strength lying in the simplicity and authenticity of local ingredients. Orthodox fasting traditions have also shaped a balanced, largely plant-based diet.

The agricultural bounty of Crete is a true gift of nature, enriched by the island’s varied terrain and altitude differences. The Region of Crete has taken meaningful steps to bridge its primary sector with tourism. A flagship initiative is the Cretan Gastronomy Center in Rethymno, offering information, traditional recipes, and educational programs to culinary enthusiasts.

Visitors can experience Cretan cuisine through vineyard tastings and traditional dishes in village tavernas. Sustainable farming and certified products ensure safe, high-quality food with minimal environmental impact.

This unwavering focus on quality and authenticity is what sets Cretan gastronomy apart—making it a true magnet for food lovers from around the world.
