TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel review platform, has released its annual ranking of the best beaches worldwide—and Greece makes a stunning appearance.
“For many travelers, the beach is the main attraction,” says Laurel Greatrix, TripAdvisor’s communications director. “Based on millions of trips, reviews, and opinions, these awards highlight the world’s best beaches, helping travelers decide where to go and how to spend their time once they arrive.”
This year, a new “unique beaches” category was also introduced, spotlighting shores with exceptional characteristics, according to euronews. From observing penguins in South Africa to exploring ancient monuments in Sicily, the lists celebrate the diversity of coastlines across the globe.
Topping the global chart for 2026 is Mexico’s Isla Pasion, returning to the number one spot after a three-year hiatus. Accessible by a 10-minute boat ride from Cozumel, the secluded island is a paradise for snorkelers, offering views of protected coral reefs and swimming alongside stingrays. It also serves as a nesting ground for sea turtles.
In Europe, Greece takes the crown. Elafonisi Beach in Crete ranks as the continent’s best and second overall worldwide. Famous for its striking pink sand—created from crushed shells—Elafonisi features shallow lagoons perfect for children and deeper waters ideal for swimming and diving. Nature lovers can explore nearby cedar forests or watch birds among the sand dunes.

Another Cretan gem, Balos Lagoon, comes in third. Once a pirate hideout, it is now a protected area known for its clear turquoise waters and dramatic rocky landscape. TripAdvisor advises wearing sturdy shoes if driving, as the descent from the parking area is steep, and checking the weather beforehand, as winds can be strong. The platform also recommends visiting early in the morning for a tranquil experience and taking the ferry from Kissamos for a relaxed approach to the lagoon.

Two more European beaches make the top ten. Praia da Falésia in Portugal’s Algarve region ranks fifth, celebrated for its ochre cliffs and breathtaking vistas. Italy’s La Pelosa Beach in Sardinia is eighth, known for its Caribbean-like waters and the 16th-century Torre della Pelosa watchtower.
