The large wildfire that broke out on Friday (July 31), in Boeotia continues to rage, with firefighting crews battling hard against multiple fire fronts.
A resident of Xironomi, speaking to MEGA News, expressed his despair, saying: “They want to burn us alive.” He linked the situation to the area’s energy burden and the presence of wind turbines in the Thisvi municipal district.
He said many wind turbines have already been installed in Boeotia, with more planned. He also stressed that century-old olive groves have been destroyed by the fire. He described the fire as having broken out in several spots around the village, noting that there was one fire in front, one behind the village, one to the left, and one to the right.
The resident also said he had to drive to the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB) after developing an eye problem from the embers while trying to help put out the fire with tree branches.
By his account, residents are staying in the village to help firefighters, fearing that if everyone leaves, the village will be destroyed entirely.
He noted that in the morning, some pine trees at the edge of the village caught fire, and that if people had not been there, the village would have been consumed.
