A new global ranking has identified the countries offering the best work-life balance in 2026, with New Zealand taking the top spot thanks to its generous leave policies and strong worker protections.

The Global Life-Work Balance Index 2025 evaluated countries based on factors such as annual leave, access to healthcare, public safety, and average weekly working hours. The results show that nations with robust social policies and flexible working conditions dominate the top positions.

Top Countries for Work-Life Balance

Following New Zealand, Ireland ranked second, offering a minimum of four weeks’ paid leave and extensive maternity benefits. Belgium placed third, with workers benefiting from up to 24 days of annual leave and strong wage coverage during sick leave.

Germany and Norway completed the top five, both providing comprehensive parental leave schemes and paid holidays. Norway, in particular, stood out for its highly flexible parental leave system, allowing parents to share extended time off.
