On Wednesday (04/03), Cyprus sent out its first emergency alert message to citizens’ mobile phones, amid escalating conflict in the Middle East and drone activity over its airspace. The system, designed to provide real-time safety instructions, marks a significant step in the country’s civil protection measures.
The alert was a test message issued by the Civil Defense authorities, aimed at informing and preparing residents for potential threats. While most of the population received the notification successfully, some citizens reported not receiving it due to a technical issue with mobile providers. Officials have assured the public that the problem will be resolved in the coming days.
In a public statement, President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed the activation of the alert system on a trial basis. He urged residents to follow official channels only and warned against spreading misinformation, emphasizing that the alert was precautionary and there was no reason for panic.
The Interior Minister, Konstantinos Ioannou, advised citizens to remain alert and calm in case the system is triggered again. Basic safety guidelines include:
- Seek shelter: Move immediately to basements, either at home or nearby, on foot only.
- Stay indoors: If a basement is unavailable, remain inside buildings away from windows and doors.
- Limit movement: Avoid traveling outdoors or using vehicles until further notice.
- Follow special protocols: Schools and hospitals already implement specific emergency procedures.
The Ministry clarified that no further test messages are planned for today, as the system is now deemed operational. Alerts will be issued again only if a real emergency arises.
