The statement comes just two days after Iran’s military central command said it had been told the US was preparing to resume military operations, backed by regional allies, and cautioned that any such move would trigger retaliation from Tehran “without limitations and considerations.”
According to the official, Washington first needs to formally declare its intent to pursue a diplomatic resolution and then agree on a timeline for moving the process forward. The official added that Iran’s delegation to the UN General Assembly, currently in New York, has full authority to restart diplomatic talks with the US.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian left Tehran for New York on Tuesday morning but will not be meeting President Donald Trump at UN headquarters, the official said.
The official also noted that details of a possible agreement to end hostilities with Washington could be worked out in New York through mediators, pointing out that Iran had already submitted its proposal to the US through intermediaries on September 16.
Calling the UN General Assembly “a golden opportunity” for the US to return to diplomacy, the official said Tehran would welcome renewed talks if Washington takes concrete steps.
