Iran has warned neighboring countries hosting U.S. forces that it would retaliate against American military bases if Washington follows through on threats to intervene in the ongoing protests inside Iran, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Wednesday.

Reuters reports that three diplomats said some personnel had been advised to leave the U.S. military’s Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar by Wednesday evening, although there were no indications of a large-scale evacuation.

One diplomat described the move as a “posture change” rather than an ordered withdrawal. Unlike last year, there was no visible transfer of troops to nearby facilities such as a stadium or shopping mall, which preceded Iran’s missile strike on the base in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear targets.

The U.S. embassy in Doha had no immediate comment, and Qatar’s foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The warning comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene in support of protesters in Iran, where a rights group says at least 2,600 people have been killed in recent days during a crackdown on one of the largest protest movements against clerical rule.

According to an Israeli assessment cited by Reuters, Trump has decided to intervene, though the scope and timing remain unclear, an Israeli official said.

In an interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Trump vowed “very strong action” if Iranian authorities execute protesters, adding: “If they hang them, you’re going to see some things.” He also urged Iranians to continue protesting and seize institutions, declaring that “help is on the way.”
