The LEGO Group has introduced LEGO® SMART Play™, a new interactive platform designed to bring LEGO creations to life through responsive, screen-free technology, marking one of the most significant innovations in the company’s history.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas, LEGO SMART Play™ is powered by the LEGO SMART Brick, a custom-designed component packed with world-first technologies that allow physical builds to react to how they are played with for the first time. The platform launches on March 1, 2026, starting with LEGO Star Wars™ sets.

LEGO executives described the launch as a major milestone for the LEGO System-in-Play, comparing its significance to the introduction of the LEGO Minifigure in 1978. The technology enables open-ended, imaginative play without screens and remains fully compatible with existing LEGO bricks.

At the heart of the system is the LEGO SMART Brick, which contains more than 20 patented innovations, including sensors, accelerometers, light and sound sensing, a miniature speaker with an onboard synthesiser, and wireless charging. The custom-made chip inside the brick is smaller than a standard LEGO stud.

The platform works through what LEGO calls the SMART Play “Trinity”: the LEGO SMART Brick, LEGO SMART Tags and LEGO SMART Minifigures. Together, they allow LEGO creations to respond in real time with sounds and behaviours that support exploration and storytelling.

“For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe,” said Julia Goldin, the company’s Chief Product & Marketing Officer. “LEGO SMART Play™ is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play.”

The first SMART Play-enabled sets will be released under the LEGO Star Wars™ brand, following an announcement made alongside executives from Disney and Lucasfilm. The collaboration brings interactive storytelling to iconic Star Wars scenes and characters, allowing builds to “play back” for the first time.

Three ‘All-In-One’ LEGO Star Wars SMART Play™ sets will debut at launch. Each includes a LEGO SMART Brick, a charger, at least one SMART Minifigure and SMART Tags.

The lineup includes Luke’s Red Five X-Wing, a 584-piece set featuring interactive laser, engine and repair sounds; Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, a 473-piece build with responsive engine effects; and the Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set, a 962-piece model that recreates the climactic confrontation from Return of the Jedi, complete with interactive lightsaber hums and music.

Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President and Head of Creative Play Lab at the LEGO Group, said the new system sets a new benchmark for imaginative play. “We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences — all without a screen,” he said.

The LEGO Star Wars SMART Play™ sets will be available for pre-order from January 9 and go on sale March 1 via LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and select retailers. The LEGO Group said the SMART Play platform will continue to expand with future updates, launches and new technology.
