A large wildfire has been burning since Friday in the National Park surrounding Mount Vesuvius, near Naples, Italy. The fire currently spans three major fronts, with the largest stretching about three kilometers. Firefighters, volunteers, and civil protection teams are working relentlessly to contain the blaze. So far, no residential areas are under direct threat.

Massive Response Efforts Underway

Over 100 firefighters, hundreds of volunteers, six Canadair firefighting aircraft, and teams from other parts of Italy have been deployed to assist in the firefighting efforts. The military is supporting operations by managing traffic, creating access routes, and supplying water to firefighting vehicles. The flames have caused significant ecological damage within the national park and are burning at elevations exceeding 1,000 meters.

Investigation into Possible Arson and Criminal Activity

Authorities, including the prosecutor’s office and the military, have launched an investigation into the fire’s cause. Past wildfires in the area have been linked to arson by organized crime groups, illegal waste burning, and wildlife relocation attempts aimed at obtaining construction permits. The current inquiry focuses on determining if such factors contributed to this incident.

Mount Etna’s New Eruption Remains Controlled

Simultaneously, Mount Etna in Sicily has erupted once more, with lava flowing from a vent situated about 3,000 meters above sea level. No nearby communities are in danger, and Catania airport continues to operate normally. Authorities are closely monitoring the volcanic activity.

The Naples area and the broader Campania region remain on high alert due to the serious situation at Vesuvius.
