Pierrakakis and Rutte Discuss Defence Financing and EU–NATO Cooperation in Brussels

Kyriakos Pierrakakis and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met in Brussels to discuss defence financing, EU–NATO cooperation, and Europe’s evolving security challenges.

On Wednesday, 10 June, Eurogroup President and Greece’s Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, visited NATO headquarters in Brussels for talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

The meeting focused on the economic and fiscal dimensions of European defence policy, against the backdrop of decisions taken at the Hague Summit to increase defence funding, as well as recent progress at the European Union level, including the activation of the national escape clause.

The two officials examined the financial aspects of defence investment and the agreed targets for higher defence spending within the Alliance. Discussions also highlighted the importance of closer EU–NATO cooperation, stronger coordination of joint efforts, and the development of Europe’s defence industrial base through joint procurement initiatives capable of delivering economies of scale and responding more effectively to growing security requirements.

Pierrakakis and Rutte also exchanged views on broader geopolitical developments and the challenges facing the European economy amid heightened global uncertainty. Their discussion addressed the continuing Russian aggression against Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East, and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, all of which have significant implications for international shipping and energy security.

Particular attention was given to the rise of hybrid threats and the evolving security challenges posed by artificial intelligence and cyberattacks, underscoring the need for sustained investment in cyber defence capabilities.

The meeting reaffirmed the strategic importance of close cooperation between the European Union and NATO at a time when security, economic resilience and fiscal responsibility have become increasingly interconnected priorities for both institutions.
