The bodies of a pilot and his 13-year-old son were recovered after their biplane crashed into the sea off the coast of the Spanish island of Mallorca, police announced on Sunday, August 3.
The Team Rocket F-4 Raider, a two-seater aircraft, went down in the waters near Puerto Sóller on Saturday evening. According to Spanish media reports, the plane appeared to be performing aerobatic maneuvers shortly before the crash.
Specialist divers were deployed to locate the missing pair. Their bodies were discovered during a recovery operation early Sunday, following an initial failed search effort the night before.
“Around 1:00 p.m. specialist divers from the Guardia Civil recovered the bodies of the pilot and his son, who was accompanying him, from a depth of around 30 meters and transported them to Puerto de Sóller,” the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. local time on Saturday, prompting an immediate response from rescue teams. With no success in locating the victims overnight, operations resumed at first light on Sunday.
