Robert Mueller, the former FBI director and special counsel who led the high-profile investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, has died at the age of 81, his former law firm confirmed on Saturday.

Mueller, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, was widely known for his role overseeing a 22-month inquiry into Moscow’s election meddling and its links to the campaign of U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite documenting extensive contacts, Mueller ultimately did not bring criminal charges against a sitting president.

Mueller previously served 12 years as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, taking the helm just one week before the September 11 attacks. He later played a key role in reshaping the agency, placing greater emphasis on counterterrorism and coordination with other U.S. intelligence bodies.

Appointed special counsel in 2017 after Trump dismissed FBI director James Comey, Mueller led an investigation that resulted in indictments against 34 individuals and entities, including Trump associates and Russian intelligence officers, as well as multiple guilty pleas and convictions.

In his 2019 report and subsequent congressional testimony, Mueller said the investigation found that Russia interfered in the election in a “sweeping and systematic fashion.” However, he stated that the probe did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government.

Mueller also examined whether Trump had obstructed justice, reviewing actions such as attempts to curtail the investigation. While he declined to determine whether the president committed a crime, he emphasized that Trump was not exonerated.

Throughout his career, Mueller earned a reputation for a disciplined and reserved approach to law enforcement, in sharp contrast to Trump’s political style. He faced sustained criticism from the president and his allies, who repeatedly attacked the investigation as politically motivated.

Trump reacted bluntly to Mueller’s death, writing on social media: “Good, I’m glad he’s dead.”

Before his tenure at the FBI, Mueller served as a federal prosecutor and led the Justice Department’s criminal division, overseeing major cases including those involving organized crime and terrorism. He also played a pivotal role in a 2004 confrontation with the White House over a controversial surveillance program, threatening to resign alongside senior Justice Department officials.

Born in New York and raised near Philadelphia, Mueller graduated from Princeton University, served as a Marine officer in Vietnam—earning honors including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart—and later earned a law degree from the University of Virginia.

Mueller is survived by his wife, Ann, and their two daughters.
