UK to Ban Social Media for Under-16s in Major Crackdown

Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the move will make children safer online, with new limits planned for social media, gaming and livestreaming platforms.

The UK government has announced plans to ban social media access for children under the age of 16, introducing one of the toughest restrictions on young people’s use of online platforms.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the measure would help protect children from the risks linked to social media use, arguing that the changes would “give kids their childhood back”.

The ban will target platforms including Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram, while also covering YouTube, Facebook and X. Messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal will not be included.

The government will also introduce restrictions on gaming and livestreaming platforms, including measures to block features that allow children to communicate with strangers.

Ban expected by next spring

Starmer said the government already has the powers to begin the first steps of the policy, with regulations expected by the end of the year and the ban potentially in place around next spring.

The UK’s approach will follow a similar model to Australia, which became the first country to introduce a ban on social media for under-16s last December.

Britain has already increased pressure on technology companies in recent years, pushing platforms to strengthen age verification systems, change algorithms and prevent children from sharing nude images taken on mobile phones.

Starmer said the decision followed consultations with parents and consideration of evidence from Australia, amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on children’s mental health.

Parents support tougher rules, consultation shows

The government said it received more than 116,000 responses from parents, young people and industry representatives during its consultation on possible restrictions.

More than 83% of responding parents said the risks of social media outweighed the benefits, while 90% supported setting a minimum age of 16 for access to social media platforms.

The government has said the new rules are designed to create a safer online environment for children, but some psychologists and researchers have questioned whether a ban alone can address the wider challenges linked to technology use.
