Maria Menounos has offered her online followers a candid look at one of the toughest sides of living with Type 1 diabetes, revealing that she nearly died in her sleep.
In a series of Instagram Stories, the 48-year-old television host and actress described the stress and uncertainty that can come with managing the disease around the clock. Menounos was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in June 2022 and has since had to closely monitor her glucose levels and insulin intake.
This time, however, a string of unexpected setbacks made the situation even more nerve-racking.
“I don’t complain often about all these health issues, but this Type 1 diabetes thing is not fun at all,” she wrote, explaining that she was about to eat when she discovered her insulin pen had malfunctioned. As if that were not enough, she said, her backup needle had also failed.
“Seriously? You’re kidding me, right?” she wrote, showing followers the devices that had stopped working.
Menounos said she contacted Medtronic to secure a replacement, just as another problem added to the pressure: alerts began going off from the continuous glucose monitor (CGM) of her father, who also has Type 1 diabetes.
“Diabetes can be very, very stressful and scary,” she added, capturing the emotional toll that daily health management can take.
The most striking moment of her disclosure came shortly afterward, when Menounos revealed she had come close to death just days earlier. “I almost died in my sleep the other day, so I’m a little tired of all this,” she wrote.
By speaking openly, Menounos shed light on an experience that often goes unseen, a reminder that even when everything appears normal, life with diabetes demands constant vigilance.
