A severe weather front on Wednesday battered the Ionian Sea islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia, interrupting ferry boat connections between the two islands and the opposite mainland.
According to port authorities, scheduled routes were cancelled due to gale force winds and rough seas.
Meanwhile, inclement weather is forecast for throughout the country on Thursday, Feb. 12, a major date on the Greek carnival season, called “Tsiknopempti”, which is translated as charred Thursday or smoky Thursday, and alternately as “Meat Thursday”, the second to last Thursday before Great Lent. The day is celebrated by the consumption of large amounts of grilled and roasted meats before Lenten fasting commences.
The most intense weather phenomena – thunderstorms – will affect the west, south and eastern Aegean, both at the beginning of the day and again from the afternoon onwards.
