Μake us preferred on Google A group of 28 students from the School of Fine Arts in Athens will present their contemporary art in “Casting Minus One,” an exhibition exploring absence, subtraction and the space between what is present and what is missing.
The exhibition, organized by the City of Athens and the Athens School of Fine Arts, opens Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Municipal Gallery of Athens and runs through September 13. It is presented in collaboration with the City of Athens’ Organization for Culture, Sports and Youth, with a focus on artistic production, research and engagement beyond the institution.
“Casting Minus One” takes its title from the artists’ attempt to examine absence through the act of removal and to create a dialogue between the positive and the negative. The exhibition considers how subtraction can challenge conventional ideas about what constitutes presence, reality and representation.

The artists describe the “minus one” as potentially a vacant space, a reflection or something that cannot be articulated or represented. Within this framework, “casting minus one” becomes a space without a center or stable ground, where familiar distinctions—such as up and down, right and left—can become reversible.
The exhibition positions this in-between space as unfamiliar territory, likening the experience of moving through it to suddenly speaking a language one does not know.
Through works that are variously imaginative, subversive, concise, unsettling or mysterious, the participating students cross the boundary of the real in an effort to occupy the space that remains.
