While Athens has often enjoyed sunny Christmas Eves and mild holiday weather, today’s rainfall has added a more wintry tone to the festive setting. Despite the challenges caused by the weather, the atmosphere remains unmistakably seasonal.
Following updated forecasts from the Hellenic Meteorological Society, predicting rain in Attica through Thursday morning and storms on Christmas Eve afternoon, the Municipality of Athens announced the postponement of its lantern event, “The Night of Wishes.” The event has been rescheduled for Friday, December 26, at 18:00.

When it does take place, “The Night of Wishes” will unfold against the backdrop of the new Christmas Market at Kotzia Square. For the first time, the biodegradable lantern release will be framed by the festive stalls and lighting of the square. The evening will be hosted by Nicol Dimitrakopoulou and Panagiotis Bougiouris.

Christmas Cinema, Indoors and Out
At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Park Your Cinema returns with a festive edition, inviting visitors to gather near the Park Kiosk for free open-air screenings.

Meanwhile, Athens’ indoor cinemas are screening seasonal favourites such as It’s a Wonderful Life, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Home Alone, and the Greek production The Christmas Carols, inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and reimagined in 19th-century Zagorochoria.
Ice Skating by the Canal
Under the lights of the SNFCC Canal and beside its illuminated fountains, the ice rink offers a festive meeting point for visitors of all ages. Entry is free, weather permitting, and the rink operates daily from 10:00 to 22:00, with pre-registration available between December 20 and January 7.
Visit the Makers’ Market at SNFCC
In the Pine Grove of the SNFCC Park, the Makers’ Market brings together handmade gifts and original creations by local designers. Open daily from 12:00 to 21:00, the market combines shopping with DJ sets, workshops, children’s activities and seasonal treats.

Last-Minute Gifts at Kypseli Municipal Market
On Wednesday, December 24 (10:00–18:00), the Kypseli Municipal Market hosts “Our Neighbourhood Market,” featuring local brands offering ceramics, jewellery, books, candles, clothing, cosmetics and artisanal food products. The event includes warm drinks and sweets in a festive, community-focused setting.
Christmas Eve Live with The Speakeasies
The Speakeasies Swing Band take to the main stage at Stavros tou Notou on Christmas Eve, delivering a lively set of swing, jazz and seasonal favourites drawn from their discography, including their Christmas album.

Family-Friendly Theatre and Ballet
Children’s performances continue across the city on Christmas Day, including productions at the Athens Concert Hall and Athens Christmas Theatre.

Pinocchio’s Magical Christmas at Athens Christmas Theatre premiers on December 25.
At the Christmas Theater, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is presented by the Varna State Opera Ballet, with a Christmas Eve performance at 20:00.

On December 24, visitors can enjoy drinks and panoramic city views at the 360° Pop-Up Bar at the SNFCC Lighthouse, with music by Michalis Kamakas and George Garavellos from 19:30 to 22:00.
