Anna Vissi will return to the Athens stage on Saturday, September 26, for a major concert at the Olympic Stadium OAKA, in an event expected to draw fans from across Greece and beyond.
The concert will feature an extensive audiovisual production and is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., with doors opening earlier in the afternoon. Surprise guest artist appearances have also been teased on the weeks leading up to the grand show.
For Vissi, the concert represents another chapter in a career that has stretched across more than five decades. For her audience, it is an opportunity to hear a catalog of songs that has accompanied several generations of Greek listeners.
One of Greece’s defining voices
Anna Vissi is one of the defining figures in modern Greek pop and laïko-pop, a style that blends elements of Greek popular music with contemporary pop and dance influences. Her long-running creative partnership with songwriter and composer Nikos Karvelas produced many of her best-known recordings and helped shape the sound of Greek popular music from the 1980s onward.
Vissi’s appeal has never been confined entirely to the Greek-speaking world. She represented Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 and 2006, and Cyprus in 1982, giving her a particularly distinctive connection to Europe’s biggest televised music competition. Her 1982 appearance remains a notable moment in Cyprus’ Eurovision history.
She also spent periods pursuing an international audience. In the late 1990s, Vissi released English-language material and toured the United States, performing in cities including New York and Los Angeles. Her song “Call Me” later reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart, giving her a rare crossover moment on the U.S. dance charts.
Her international appearances have included the Royal Albert Hall in London, where she performed in 2006 following an extensive promotional period around Eurovision.
That relationship between performer and audience will again be at the center of Saturday’s concert. The OAKA show is being presented not simply as a retrospective of Vissi’s career, but as a new production designed to bring together her established hits, contemporary staging and unexpected collaborations.
