Whether it’s the perfect setting for a first date, a solo evening to cry your heart out over a favorite romantic drama, or a family night under the summer sky, open-air cinemas are the undisputed gems of Athenian summer life.

In the midst of the city’s relentless heatwaves, even the slightest drop in temperature after sunset feels like a gift—just enough to coax you out of the house and into the welcoming embrace of your local cinema yard. For film lovers, it’s a chance to revisit beloved classics or catch hidden gems in re-release, all under the stars.

The lights dim, a soft glow lingers from nearby balconies, adding to the charm rather than distracting. You open a cold drink, breathe in the scent of jasmine drifting through the night air, and let the magic begin. We know that feeling well—and we think everyone should experience it. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the most iconic open-air cinemas in central Athens, along with a few lesser-known treasures worth the extra journey.

Aigli Zappeiou

Established in 1904, Aigli Zappeiou is Athens’ oldest open-air cinema, nestled in the lush Zappeion Gardens—once a lively meeting place for intellectuals and artists and still one of the city’s most picturesque spots. Located beside the iconic Zappeion Hall, the cinema offers a diverse program ranging from art-house gems to blockbusters and family-friendly films. With 400 seats, it elevates the movie-going experience with indulgent touches like handmade deep-dish pizzas and bottled cocktails crafted by expert mixologists. Aigli is already open for the summer season, with screenings running through October.

Cine Dexameni

Cine Dexameni takes its name from the historic Dexameni Square in the Kolonaki neighborhood, nestled at the foot of Lycabettus Hill. Both the cinema and the square are named after Hadrian’s Reservoir, which lies beneath—the ancient cistern was built in the 2nd century AD as part of the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s ambitious aqueduct project to supply water to Athens.

Hardly your typical cinema setting.

Originally a shadow-puppet theater, Cine Dexameni returned to its cinematic roots in 1991. Just steps away, the beloved Dexameni Café—once a haunt for literary greats like Georgios Souris, Alexandros Papadiamantis, Kostas Varnalis, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Odysseas Elytis—remains an ideal spot to unwind with a drink and discuss the film under the stars. Cine Dexameni is expected to open later this month.

Cine Paris

With over a century of history, Cine Paris is a cornerstone of Athenian cinema, located near the Acropolis. Opened in the 1920s on Kidathineon Street, it was named after Paris by its Greek founder, a hairdresser with years of experience in the French capital. Initially housed in a closed space, the cinema moved in the early 1960s to its current location at 22 Kydathineon, in a building known for its unique architecture.

After its renovation in 2024, Cine Paris has returned with a selection of timeless classics and the latest releases, all with English subtitles. The cinema offers a memorable experience, with a terrace that boasts stunning views of the Acropolis. For the best experience, arrive before sunset to enjoy the view. Cine Paris is already open for the season.

Cine Thision

Situated on the picturesque pedestrian street of Aeropagitou, one of Athens’ most beautiful promenades, Cine Thision is impossible to miss—an iconic cinema that has already opened for the season. Established in 1935, it is one of the city’s longest-running cinemas, operating each spring and summer with a brief interruption during World War II. Since 1980, it has been carefully preserved and transformed into a charming oasis in the heart of Athens, just beneath the Acropolis.

Cine Thision is known for its carefully curated selection of films, featuring both beloved classics and the latest releases. Visitors can enjoy a view of the illuminated Acropolis while sipping homemade sour cherry liqueur or refreshing sour cherry juice, elevating the open-air cinema experience.

Cine Zefyros

Nestled in the vibrant Petralona neighborhood, at the foot of Filopappou Hill, Cine Zefyros is located on Troon Street, a lively area renowned for its charming cafes and tavernas. Already open for the season, this cinema offers a time-traveling experience. With its retro aesthetic, Cine Zefyros presents a unique blend of classic and artistic films, along with the year’s top releases.

Riviera Cinema

Located in the lively Exarcheia neighborhood, Riviera Cinema is a favorite among locals, set in a beautiful garden on the pedestrian Valtetsiou Street. Surrounded by restaurants, cafes, and the distinctive energy of Exarcheia—currently at risk of gentrification—Riviera has yet to open its doors for the season. However, it will soon welcome guests with a screening of Kyuka Before Summer’s End, the debut feature film by Greek director Kostis Charamountanis.

Cine War Museum

Located near the Evangelismos metro stop, Cine War Museum is one of Athens’ newest open-air cinemas, having opened in 2021 beside the city’s War Museum. With sleek design, amphitheater-style seating for 220, and top-tier audiovisual equipment, it offers a premium cinematic experience under the stars. The venue is bordered by lush greenery, while the bar goes beyond the basics, serving cocktails, corn dogs, and a range of finger foods. Though slightly pricier than most, it draws cinephiles for its comfort and quality. It remains closed for now but is expected to reopen later in the season—operating Tuesday through Sunday.

Flerry Cinema (Kallithea)

Tucked away in the heart of Kallithea, Flerry Cinema is a true neighborhood gem with one of the largest and most inviting garden settings in the city. A longstanding cultural landmark, it offers high-quality screenings in a beautifully landscaped space that blends vintage charm with modern comfort. A favorite among locals and cinephiles alike.

Cine Alsos

In the heart of the suburban town of Nea Filadelfeia, at the entrance to the lush Nea Filadelfeia Park, Cine Alsos is one of Attica’s oldest and most beloved open-air cinemas. Since its first screenings in 1965, it has become a summer staple, offering a nostalgic escape under the stars. With its classic director’s chairs, tranquil setting, and decades-long tradition—with iconic hits like Zorba the Greek and today’s blockbusters.

Cine Floisvos

Located just nine meters from the sea in the Floisvos Park of Palaio Faliro, Cine Floisvos is the Athens Riviera’s go-to open-air cinema. Operating since 2003, it’s a favorite for romantic movie nights and one of the city’s top venues for summer premieres. Beyond films, the cinema features a vibrant garden café open daily, a playground for younger guests, and dedicated spaces for families and private events—offering entertainment and relaxation in a true coastal oasis.
