GEK TERNA is strengthening its international footprint with a major win in Romania: two large-scale railway infrastructure projects with a combined value of €1 billion.
TERNA, in partnership with Alstom Romania, has been declared the provisional preferred bidder for the design and full rehabilitation of a 83 km-long double-track railway line from Craiova to Igiroasa. This line forms part of the broader Orient/East-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network.
Project Details
The projects were tendered by CFR, Romania’s national railway infrastructure manager, and include the following segments:
- LOT 1: Craiova – Filiași with a budget of €543.4 million
- LOT 2: Filiași – Igiroasa with a budget of €449.2 million
The study phase is expected to last 12 months, followed by a 36-month construction period. Barring unforeseen delays, contract signing is anticipated by the end of the year.
A European Construction Powerhouse
With this new Romanian project, GEK TERNA further consolidates its standing as one of Europe’s leading infrastructure and concession groups, as highlighted by Group Chairman & CEO Giorgos Peristeris during the company’s annual general meeting.
“Despite a demanding global environment and existing challenges — such as the limited availability of skilled labor and intense competition — we continue to maintain our strong position in the construction sector. TERNA, the largest construction company in Greece with annual revenues of €1.3 billion, consistently delivers high-standard projects with technical excellence, reliability, and solid profitability,” noted Peristeris.
He emphasized that, “our construction backlog now stands at approximately €7 billion, projected over a five-year horizon. This ensures stable and sustainable profitability, while the pipeline continues to grow with new projects in both Greece and abroad.”
Strategic Asset
Peristeris stressed that TERNA’s backlog is not a static figure, but a reflection of the company’s dynamic capability to successfully undertake and deliver complex projects. “It proves our entrepreneurial and technical competence — not just in securing contracts, but in executing them efficiently, on time, and to the highest standards,” he said.
A Trusted Name
Addressing shareholders, Peristeris highlighted TERNA’s competitive advantages: “We are a point of reference for Greece’s technical sector — the most reliable partner for our clients, suppliers, and subcontractors, and a key ambassador for Greek engineering expertise abroad.”
