In the wake of PASOK’s failed attempt to unseat the Greek government through a no-confidence vote, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is proceeding with a cabinet reshuffle. However, in characteristic fashion, he has revealed little about his plans, keeping both political insiders and the public guessing.
As part of the process, Mitsotakis is holding a series of discussions with key ministers and figures within New Democracy. Reports indicate that some officials are preparing for ministerial transfers, while others may be removed from the government altogether.
In recent hours, the Prime Minister has met with several ministers and officials, including Minister of Education Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of Energy Theodoros Skylakakis, former Minister of Migration Dimitris Kairidis, former Minister of Civil Protection and Migration Notis Mitarakis, and former Minister of State Stavros Papastavrou. These names are at the center of reshuffle speculation, with some expected to switch ministries while others may return to cabinet roles. However, until Mitsotakis announces the final lineup later this week, nothing is set in stone.
Key Government Figures Set to Stay
At the Maximos Mansion, several key government figures are expected to retain their positions: Akis Skertsos, as Minister of State, plays a pivotal role in coordinating government policies and ensuring smooth execution across ministries. Giorgos Mylonakis, serving as Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, assists in administrative functions and bridges communication between the Prime Minister’s office and other government departments. Pavlos Marinakis, who holds the dual role of Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesperson, is responsible for conveying official government policies and decisions to the public and media. Thanasis Kontogeorgis, another Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, supports the administration’s daily operations and ensures coordination among ministries. The status of Makis Voridis remains uncertain—some reports suggest he may stay at the Prime Minister’s office, while others indicate he could take over the Ministry of Energy.
The Contenders for the Finance Ministry
The biggest unanswered question is who will be Greece’s next Finance Minister. It is widely expected that Kostis Hatzidakis will transition to the Maximos Mansion, leaving a vacancy for one of the most critical roles in the government. The two leading candidates to replace him are Theodoros Skylakakis and Kyriakos Pierrakakis. According to sources, Pierrakakis is Mitsotakis’s preferred choice.
If Pierrakakis is indeed transferred, a domino effect of reshuffling is expected, impacting multiple ministries. Broader changes are also likely at the deputy minister level, with high-performing MPs being considered for government positions.
With the official announcement expected by the end of the week, all eyes are on Mitsotakis as he finalizes his choices.
