Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on the evening of Saturday June 14. The conversation was initiated by the Israeli leader as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following recent developments in the Tel Aviv–Tehran conflict.

During the call, Mitsotakis stressed the urgent need for de-escalation. While acknowledging that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, he emphasized that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward. “The last thing the region needs,” he noted, “is the opening of new fronts.”

Mitsotakis also highlighted the critical importance of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.

Cyprus Initiates Diplomatic Efforts

Meanwhile, Cyprus has launched its own diplomatic initiative aimed at easing regional tensions. On Sunday, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced that Iran has asked Cyprus to deliver a message to Israel — a request he confirmed will be carried out.

Christodoulides added that he would speak with Prime Minister Netanyahu later the same day and revealed that Cyprus has asked the European Union to convene a Foreign Affairs Council to discuss the unfolding situation in the Middle East.
