Greece has extended its debt restructuring program for loans linked to the Swiss franc, giving borrowers additional time to enter the scheme, according to an announcement by government officials.
The extension pushes the deadline to 30 September 2026, covering all categories of borrowers previously included in the framework. The decision was presented as part of a broader legislative bill by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.
Nearly half of borrowers already enrolled
Officials said that approximately 17,000 borrowers have already joined the program, representing nearly 50% of all individuals holding mortgages or other loans tied to the Swiss franc.
Authorities noted that earlier deadlines varied depending on borrower eligibility categories, with some expiring in June 2026 and others in August 2026. The extension is intended to ensure more time for participation across all groups.

Government representatives described the response to the scheme as strong, saying it reflects a clear need for a structured solution to long-standing repayment challenges.
Broader housing and property policy measures
In parallel, officials also referred to the planned launch of a state-backed housing support mechanism designed to assist vulnerable households. The initiative includes provisions allowing tenants to remain in their homes for up to 12 years, supported by rental subsidies and the option to repurchase the property.
Authorities said a proposal for the program has already been submitted and is currently under review, with the goal of launching the scheme in full by autumn 2026.
Legal framework and court ruling implementation
Commenting on recent legal developments related to debt protection law, officials confirmed that a ruling by the country’s Supreme Court will be implemented.
However, they noted that the ministry is still reviewing the practical application of the decision, describing it as complex and requiring careful interpretation. A special committee has been tasked with examining the details in order to establish a clear and workable implementation framework.
