Greece has begun discussions with Syria’s transitional government on the voluntary repatriation of Syrian nationals, as migration, asylum and return policies took center stage during a meeting between officials from both countries.
Greek Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris met with a delegation from Syria’s transitional authorities to discuss the prospects for safe, voluntary and sustainable returns, taking into account recent developments in Syria and in full respect of international law.
During the meeting, Plevris outlined Greece’s current policy on migrant returns and presented initiatives aimed at strengthening voluntary return and reintegration programs.
The two sides also exchanged views on broader migration issues, including asylum procedures, international protection and the implementation of the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum. They explored opportunities for practical cooperation between the relevant authorities of both countries on matters of shared interest.
A key focus of the discussions was improving cooperation on the identification of Syrian nationals, the timely issuance of travel documents and the establishment of the necessary conditions for the effective implementation of return procedures where permitted under the existing legal framework.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Syrian delegation invited Plevris to visit Damascus to continue the dialogue at the highest political level.
