The Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, is set to take part in the European Union Defence Ministers’ Council scheduled to be held in Nicosia, Cyprus. The meeting is expected to centre on a broad range of security and defence priorities facing the Union.
In remarks ahead of the gathering, he indicated that discussions would extend beyond the situation in Ukraine, encompassing maritime security and the safeguarding of freedom of navigation. Particular emphasis, he noted, would be placed on the EU maritime operation “Aspides,” which is currently under Greek command, describing it as a mission of central importance. He added that attention would also be given to its mandate, possible expansion, and the safety of participating forces.
He further suggested that ministers would exchange views on the European Union’s broader defence strategy, including the development of a more unified defence framework intended to complement NATO. In this context, reference was made to Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union, which enshrines the principle of mutual assistance and solidarity among member states.
He also underlined that a working lunch would provide an opportunity for more in-depth discussion on the defence dimensions of the forthcoming Security Strategy, with particular focus on improving defence readiness, strengthening the European pillar within NATO, enhancing decision-making efficiency, and advancing the operational application of the Union’s mutual defence clause.
During his visit to Cyprus, the Greek minister is also expected to be received at the Presidential Palace by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. In addition, he is scheduled to meet with the Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios of Cyprus, at the Archiepiscopal See.
The visit coincides with the conclusion of the Cypriot Presidency of the European Union, a context that, according to the minister, carries symbolic weight, particularly for Greece, given the shared historical and cultural ties within the wider European family.
