Ruling New Democracy (ND) party maintained a commanding lead in terms of voting intention and slightly increased its support, while the newly formed Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) consolidated second place. At the same time, PASOK lost further ground, according to a new Alco opinion poll published on Friday.

The survey, conducted for Efimerida ton Syntakton daily newspaper, put ND at 24.6%, up from 24% in the firm’s previous poll, released on June 30.

ELAS rose to 15.3% from 14.7%, while socialist-social democrat PASOK fell to 9.7% from 10.4%, remaining in third place.

The Greek Solution (Elliniki Lysi), a right-wing and Eurosceptic party, ranked fourth with 6.9%, up from 6.7%. It was followed by the also newly formed Hope for Democracy party with 6.4%, down from 7.8%; the Communist Party (KKE) with 6.2% was down from 6.4%; the Course of Freedom (Plefsi Eleftherias) – a right-wing and Eurosceptic party – with 3.6% was up from 3.1%; Yanis Varoufakis’ MeRA25 with 2.7%, up from 2.3%; the right-wing Voice of Reason (Foni Logikis) with 2.5%, up from 2.3%; ultra-conservative Niki unchanged at 1.4%; while the once dominant on the left spectrum SYRIZA posted a paltry 1.2%, down from 1.3%.

Under Greece’s current electoral law, parties must secure at least 3% of the national vote (of valid ballots) to enter the 300-deputy parliament.

The poll also examined the prospects for a potential new political party led by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. A whopping 83 percent of respondents said they were either unlikely or very unlikely to support such a party, while 12% said they would be fairly or very likely to vote for it.

Asked to identify the country’s most pressing problems, 51% of respondents cited the rising cost of living, followed by corruption at 22%. The functioning of state institutions ranked third with 9%, ahead of crime (6%), illegal migration (4%) and education and housing, each at 2%.

The findings broadly reinforce the trend seen in recent opinion polls, which have shown center-right ND preserving a comfortable lead despite continued public concern over inflation and government accountability, while Tsipras’ ELAS has emerged as the principal opposition force amid PASOK’s continued difficulty in translating voter dissatisfaction into electoral gains.

Recent surveys have also consistently identified the cost of living as the dominant issue shaping public opinion, with institutional trust and corruption remaining among voters’ leading concerns.
