Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, holding talks that underscored the growing strategic partnership between Greece and India.

According to Greek government sources, the two leaders conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral relations and reaffirmed the strong level of cooperation between their countries. The meeting came two years after Mitsotakis’ official visit to India and two and a half years after Modi’s landmark visit to Athens, which elevated Greece-India relations to a strategic partnership.

Greece-India Strategic Partnership Gains Momentum

Both sides expressed their shared intention to build on the current momentum and further deepen cooperation, particularly in defense, shipping, shipbuilding and infrastructure.

Mitsotakis reiterated that Greece can serve as India’s gateway to Europe, citing the country’s geographic location and infrastructure network. He also reaffirmed Greece’s willingness to participate in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a major connectivity initiative aimed at strengthening trade and transport links.

The leaders also discussed the recent EU-India trade agreement. Mitsotakis congratulated Modi on the agreement, describing it as a unique opportunity to enhance economic and geopolitical ties between the European Union and India at a time of global uncertainty.

Opportunities for Greek Exports to India

A key point for the Greek side was the potential for high-quality Greek agricultural products to gain greater access to the Indian market. Mitsotakis highlighted products such as olive oil and kiwis as examples of Greece’s premium agri-food exports that could benefit from closer EU-India economic cooperation.

Ukraine and Artificial Intelligence on the Agenda

Beyond trade and bilateral ties, the two prime ministers also discussed the latest developments in Ukraine.

Artificial intelligence was another focal point of their talks, reflecting the setting of their meeting at the AI Impact Summit. Mitsotakis stressed that both Greece and India have meaningful contributions to make to the global conversation on the evolution and governance of AI.
